Sunset Boulevard
What is it with Billy Wilder that he talks subjects that weren't talked about. He is so ahead of its time. I decided after The Apartment it was a fair shot to watch another one of his film.
This film is wonderful. Just wonderful. An amazing critique of hollywood exposing the dark side of the industry. I can see the 50's being mad about this film because oh man it takes the critique to the next level. It shows how mad a person can go from just getting left behind because being too old.
The pacing I got mixed thoughts about. This film starts off pretty slow and with an boring road. I think it doesn't manage to do a lot for the first 45 minutes but then it just gets better. I can understand if some people didn't really get though this film but it gets so much better afterwards.
After Betty comes this film takes such an interesting turn and it even turns the atmosphere into an eerie horror vibe. It feels like Norma is lurking at every corner and I just loved the whole writing in secret thing because it added so much tension to this.
Norma is such an brilliant character. She is so complex and kind of the victim in someway because she is really mentally ill and not in the right head. Completely overshadowed by greed and obsession that she can't even think straight.
Gillis uses advantage of her money to live his own life well. Which makes Gillis complex as well since he's the "hero" of the film even though they're both villains in their own way.
Billy Wilder surprises me once again and I'm so into his work. I'm gonna be watching so much more of his films now and even probably tomorrow I'm gonna tune some in.
