Thus, irony is created because we are given more information that Leonard has, and even though what he thinks he’s doing is heroic for avenging his wife, we know that he already did that and he is just making up more John Gs so that his life can always seem to have a purpose. This is the significance of having tattoos because they are permanent even if the use of the tattoos has already occurred; Leonard will never know. At the end of the movie, it makes you think, how many John Gs has he killed already but more importantly how many more John Gs will Leonard kill in the future.
