Se7en
🔥 3rd Watch | Top 100 | David Fincher Ranked
Seven is one of my favorite films from one of my favorite directors. Everything about the film is outstanding. It has amazing direction, acting, cinematography, score, editing, and a realistic punch to the gut.
First off, the acting. You had brilliant performances from Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. They had a clear chemistry which stretched throughout the entire film. A notable aspect of the story was how their friendship evolved over time. Part of their success was the screenwriting, like with them sleeping on the same couch (that was brilliant character development) but without their convincing acting, it wouldn’t have been nearly as memorable. In addition, Kevin Spacey was spectacular and gave one of most chilling performances of all-time.
Next, the cinematography was magnificent. It perfectly created the dark atmosphere that was intended. A lot of scenes had amazing framing, lighting, and camera movements. But how was the dark atmosphere applied to the entire film? The direction by Fincher.
Fincher had some of the best direction that I’ve ever seen. Everything detail perfectly fit his dark world. The train over Mill’s apartment. The constant rain expressing a dark world. The little details are what drive the film together. Without Fincher, Se7en would’ve been way worse.
Finally, the most underrated aspect of the film is the score. I don’t think nearly anyone talks about it enough. Everyone knows Howard Shore for his work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but in my unpopular opinion, Se7en's score is nearly just as amazing. Without the score, the tone wouldn’t have been the same.
