Squid Game
I can understand why a lot of people would just find Squid Game to be a “good” show, but nothing spectacular. With everyone talking about “Squid Games this” and “Squid Games that,” and it being so hyped and memed about, it’s hard to fully like it. Also, the premise of the show is extremely dark, which is understandable. However, I absolutely loved Squid Game.
Although it’s amplified a little bit (okay a lot), Squid Game is basically a critique on how we treat athletes. In Squid Game, VIPs watch players compete with each other and die and live in pain. This pain is inflicted just for the entertainment of the VIPs, or spectators. In today’s society, we watch players compete where we have extremely high expectations. Today, when athletes are trying to preserve their mental health by taking breaks and resting, we criticize them. I’m not trying to get political, but Squid Game is a relevant show. It asks us to think what really is consent. Does a “yes” actually mean a “yes.”
Personally, I thought that every episode was great, especially the first. The “Red Light, Green Light” was filmed to perfection. It’s no wonder why it’s so iconic. In addition, as you go through the show, you are met with twists and turns which keep you on your heels. In a way, nothing feels expected.
Furthermore, the acting was phenomenal. Every character was entertaining, and they portrayed their characters with great success. I loved the characters your supposed to love. I hated the characters you’re supposed to hate. I felt bad for the characters your supposed to feel bad towards. Each character made me feel the right emotion.
The last thing I want to mention is the colors. The use of color in Squid Game is among my favorite in any piece of film. The color shows a clear contrast with the dark premise. When you see the colors for the first time and you are introduced to the contest, it feels fun and diverting. However, after the first game, you realize that the game is a lot darker than it truly is. Then, you feel a sense of irony and when the VIPs are introduced, it feels like the vibrant coloring represents how the VIPs view the game: entertaining, and nothing more.
