In Bruges
What an incredible portrayal of morality, redemption, values and Bruges. Prior to the film, I had not a clue Bruges existed, like Ray, I didn’t know where it was. It’s in Belgium.
This easily became my favourite film after viewing it for the first time last year. I had no clue the influence it would have on me. Like The Good Place, this forced me to re-evaluate and re-examine the notion of morality. Is morality set in stone? Can it be bent to align with an individual’s idea of morality? Is it the same for everyone?
On paper this seems like a generic gangster film, where a guy fucks up and the other guy has to kill him. In Bruges, instead gives an insight into the characters motivations, their beliefs and their values. It takes an already morally fucked up situation and attempts to alleviate it, thanks to McDonagh’s witty writing.
The juxtaposition of opposing values regarding morality and the symbolism to purgatory and everything related to afterlife goes crazy in this film man. I think for me, this just might be My favourite McDonagh Film ever. Also I really really wanna go to Bruges.
