Ngl this isn't my usual type of show I'd watch. I decided to try it out because I saw both James Nesbitt and Richard Armitage both on screen together and my little autistic brain just saw Thorin and Bofur from The Hobbit. I didn't even think I'd like this that much or that id watch it all, much less binge it. But I ended up getting really wrapped up in it.
I was so confused up until the last 35-40ish minutes on how it would end. All the pieces were so sperated. On the screen but presented in such a way that I took them for granted. But once the dots started to connect themselves, it hit me like a bunch of bricks. The moment Ray sat down to explain to Cassie/Megan his version of that night, it all made sense. Before then it felt like putting together a puzzle where all the pieces were the same color and similar shapes. It felt like they should fit together but they didn't, not quite exactly. It was all just not quite right.
I do feel bad a little for Ray. He dedicated his whole heart to Cassie, literally covered up a murder to defend her even though he suspected she was guilty. And when he repressed the evening, went on loving her in solitude for 17 years. Like yeah it's sad and a little pathetic but his love for her, a blind obsession at certain points, was so strong that I do admire and respect the dedication and adoration. Glad he wasn't bitter in the end because I do believe that Megan belonged with her family and that it a better fit for her because of how she had grown during those 17 years.
The actual quality of the show seemed pretty good. I'm no expert on these kinds of shows so I have no clue on if it holds up in it's respective genres but in a general sense, I think it is highly underrated both plot wise and quality wise. The scenes, while nothing super memorable, fit the setting. The music properly setting the vibe. (Even the jazz creep scene. While surprising, gave you an outline on what character they were presenting Ken and Barbie as.) The effects, specifically the blood, we're more realistic than I expected. Of course they used too much in certain scenes, as tends to happen when on screen. I'm not upset about the extra blood in some scenes, its not cheesily done.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and emotionally wrapped up. Would 100% recommend, especially if you're into this kind of show.
