First Man

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Damien Chazelle’s “First Man" expertly weaves together the vastness of space, with the emotions of human sorrow and loss. Ryan Gosling gives an impactful portrayal of Neil Armstrong as he navigates tragedy amidst extraordinary accomplishments. The sound design is exceptional, juxtaposing the claustrophobic creaks within the spacecraft with the deafening silence of the moon’s surface, capturing feelings of isolation and emotional distance - grief is a core theme throughout, with Armstrong’s stoicism concealing a pain stemming from his daughter’s passing. With its meticulous soundscape and poignant storytelling, “First Man” delves into the toll hidden within the victories of history, creating a film that is both captivating and emotionally stirring.
