I don’t really have a well thought out review for this, just a horror experience like nothing I have seen and is truly strange.
I really like the pacing choice here, those character introductions are a fresh and great way to show all the sides to a story and I must also say it takes a lot less time to film a movie like this, at least i’d think so. The different povs and everything are so engaging and have you guessing even when you know the outcome.
It was actually quite scary too, I love how little cheap jumps are used and just pure creepy with the clown visuals and what I think to be sort of subtle gore, although it does get pretty hairy at times.
Once again the premise is overdone. While I’m not 100% certain on whats going on but I think it is some cult shit again. Yes I know it isn’t confirmed but many things point towards this. But I do like the ambiguity, I’m tired of these cult movies trying to resolve everything with low stake coincidences so here I liked it, especially how they don’t all just snap back, it takes time.
I really liked our main performances, Garner does a fantastic job, being asked to handle a plethora of emotions and even asked to stand down at the end. Besides her Alex’s performance stood out to me, children usually can’t handle roles like this but he nails it, very accurately portraying a child who would go through all this and is just left blank.
As far as ambience goes it hits it out the park, super dark visuals and an incredible score to pair. All those chimes and dark ticks work extremely well with those hard fought scenes with those bright scenes having just as solid music with it.
Solid comedic aspects but ultimately ruined by my theaters behavior yet again, just sad. Besides them I can see the jokes hitting but really i’d rather them stay serious at most times with the themes were dealing with here.
All around far better than Cregger’s Barbarian but unfortunately still is hitting it hard on this cult plotpoint that I really give no shits about.
