Frankenstein
He saw the electric bill, that’s really why he burnt the house down.
Guillermo Del Toro can be hit or miss with me sometimes but one thing that he never misses is the style. The sets, the costumes, the practical effects are always amazing with him and this film is no different. You can feel the detail and care poured into every set and frame of this film. Mia Goth looks literally ethereal in her dresses, Oscar Isaac looks like he stepped right out of sleepy hollow and Jacob Elordi looks amazing as “The Monster”
Jacob Elordi really blew me away with this performance. The true contrast between the subtle innocent child just born and curious about the world and the rage filled vengeance seeking side that we usually associate Frankenstein’s monster with. Oscar Isaac never ceases to impress me with his performances and this is also no different. When he’s not chugging milk he’s perfectly playing a man obsessed with greatness and blinded by ambition.
I also love the way this adaptation unlike others made Frankenstein not the loving creator who created a monster. But instead the regretful creator who was not ready to be a parent and created a monster by not showing it love. I think the only nitpick is I didn’t need them to say “You’re the monster Victor” like that was obvious enough but other than that great film and definitely recommend. Hope to see more gothic horror films like this and Nosferatu.
