Lost in Translation
I last watched this film in my senior year of high school in my screenwriting class. I was 17, and I found it to be sort of perplexing but beautiful, and I really understood where Scarlett's character was coming from. Trying to find yourself, trying to be someone you aren't yet...Fast forward to 20 years later, when just this morning my son picked out my Jesus and Mary Chain Just Like Honey record to play while we ate. Needless to say, I identify more now with Bill, and it's kind of incredible how Sofia can capture both of these perspectives so well. I had never really understood how both mid-life and very early adulthood are so similar, and how universal the feeling of being lost in your life could be. This is a magical screenplay, with magical performances. I think this is genius level work, and something that I think I'll revisit every once and a while, just to see how it hits me as I go through my own life.
