i’ve got an attachment to this film from the amount of times as a kid i’d see it playing while channel surfing and put it on and sit around waiting for jim carrey to come out swinging and hitting animals with mallets and saying “sssssssssmokin”

i knew very little about the film beforehand besides that it touched on daddy issues, and as someone with a shitty dad i was immediately on board with ole girl saying “yeah fuck him, why should you help him when he won’t even acknowledge how his shitty fathering fucked you up?” was particularly affected by the slow reveal that in his screenplay, the father wrote his daughter as his mother and himself as a young boy because he can more easily identify his daughter as maternal and tortured, and himself as a naive child; forever trapped in his formative trauma, determined to replay his memories in the very house where they occurred forever the ending really resonated with me in its almost wholesome finale. having a shitty dad isn’t a life (or death) sentence and if you’re going to sit around waiting for your shitty dad to apologize or even acknowledge his actions, you’re just gonna be sitting around waiting; stewing in your own pain and misery. if you really want to break generational trauma, then you have to find the strength to be the bigger person in spite of spending your entire life being made to feel like the smaller one

still trying to place what makes this movie so rewatchable so rare that a movie is equally devastating as it is hopeful and sweet and tender totally unfair that moonlight’s lasting cultural imprint is it being robbed of its best picture moment at the academy awards

started watching last night while on my phone and finished this morning on my phone while i worked (the way brad pitt would’ve wanted it) was particularly annoyed seeing kerry condon (a real actress) being reduced to playing the *dumb woman™* part, swooning over brad pitt in the most tedious “will they won’t they,” and i especially hate the fact that this idiotic movie pretends that this isn’t the case by making her character an engineer as if that negates how stupidly she’s written fuck the oscar’s for making me watch this bullshit and fuck apple tv for using this to promote their broadcast deal with f1 racing cant wait til next year when i get to watch “nfl” produced and distributed by netflix to promote their exclusive broadcasting agreement with the nfl
