Sentimental Value
i knew very little about the film beforehand besides that it touched on daddy issues, and as someone with a shitty dad i was immediately on board with ole girl saying “yeah fuck him, why should you help him when he won’t even acknowledge how his shitty fathering fucked you up?”
was particularly affected by the slow reveal that in his screenplay, the father wrote his daughter as his mother and himself as a young boy because he can more easily identify his daughter as maternal and tortured, and himself as a naive child; forever trapped in his formative trauma, determined to replay his memories in the very house where they occurred forever
the ending really resonated with me in its almost wholesome finale. having a shitty dad isn’t a life (or death) sentence and if you’re going to sit around waiting for your shitty dad to apologize or even acknowledge his actions, you’re just gonna be sitting around waiting; stewing in your own pain and misery.
if you really want to break generational trauma, then you have to find the strength to be the bigger person in spite of spending your entire life being made to feel like the smaller one
