Nightcrawler

a movie rightly called a thriller yet also more, this was brilliantly made and also has a standout performance from jake gyllenhaal, the best of him i’ve seen. fully encapsulates a man at the edge of his sanity, someone who is psycho yet also methodical at same time. the way that gilroy crafts the dark, moody atmosphere of LA with quick camera movements of the car and infectious score engross you into the film. the supporting performances aren’t to go without mention either, especially riz ahmed. i loved the ending, showcasing how lou and nina are practically the same person in their respective fields, and how lou gets his two vans like joe did earlier in the film (to me foreshadowing that he will eventually go down the same path and die). showcases the danger and ethics of the media and journalism, the desensitization and glorification of violence and crime, and the corruption and greed of capitalism and money. absolutely brilliant
