Godzilla

This one fully subverted my expectations, Godzilla is such an iconic character/ monster that it is easy to get caught up in the general idea of the monster and not realize how emotional and raw the source material is. This was such a good allegory and metaphor for the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the effects it had on the citizens of Japan in the moment and the decades following it. A beautifully executed movie that looked very good for the 50’s, I was not expecting Godzilla to get so much screen time and to see so much city destruction. Watched this on Max before deciding if I wanted to get it on criterion and i think I’m definitely getting it now.
