The Invite
Olivia Wilde’s The Invite is an interesting movie that muddles the line between comedy and drama. The 4 person cast and single setting makes the film feel very intimate. All 4 performances were amazing and everyone hit their comedic beats perfectly. The tonal shift at the transition between the second and third acts was very well done and shed a light on the reality of broken relationships and how one fun night under the influence isn’t enough to magically repair years of gradual alienation. The ambiguous ending left me thinking quite deeply as well. I would love to ask Olivia Wilde if Joe and Angela have come to the realization that their relationship is over or if playing the piano is meant to signify starting a new relationship with the same person as Pińa so aptly put it. Perhaps there is no right answer at all.
