Django Unchained
There’s very few “classics” that have both a style and substance. This being my first Tarantino film, I was very impressed by how good the story was but also the aesthetic. This was an extremely high quality spaghetti western film that captured the horrors of slavery as they were. Let me start by getting it off that the acting was probably the best Ive seen from a movie, like this cast was STACKED. Of course Waltz, Foxx, and Jackson and stand out performances, but Leo’s performance of Calvin Candie is probably the BEST villian performance I’ve seen since Heath Ledger in Dark Knight. How he didn’t win an Oscar blows my mind.
I loved the camera work, the soundtrack, the setting, the writing was PEAK. Everything was just PEAK. It was just cool to see a character like Django and a character like Dr. Shultz, two characters that were just tuff and that you just wanted to root for the whole movie. Like Django was just a tuff cowboy. “I like the way you die boy.” BARS.
This movie would be a 10, HOWEVER, I’m not the biggest fan of the ending. ALSO SIDEBAR, can we acknowledge that Tarantinos cameo in the end is like by far one of the worst cameos I’ve ever seen. Idk why he was British and it was just kinda like that one meme where it was like “who is this guy?” Back to the film however, I just think they should’ve kept Candie alive longer and made him like the villian up until the end. Even if they kept candy dying the way he did, they could’ve at least given my boi Walter Goggins some more screen time and like made him step up and be menacing. Overall though, I loved this film, it was peak. 8.5-9/10.
