Whiplashedea9.9· May 6, 2024Follow"There are no two words in the English language more harmful than "good job"" Whiplash is a cinematic masterpiece that leaves audiences (me) breathless and on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Damien Chazelle's second effort is a gripping and intense exploration of ambition, obsession, and the pursuit of greatness in the world of jazz music. What sets Whiplash apart is its pacing and portrayal of the sacrifices required to achieve greatness. The film is a full of pressure and tension, as Fletcher pushes Neiman to his physical and emotional limits in pursuit of musical perfection. Simmons' portrayal of Fletcher is both terrifying and mesmerizing, as he alternates between moments of seemingly genuine mentorship and brutal psychological manipulation. To me, this film is a meditation on the cost of ambition and the thin line between greatness and madness. Andrew's single-minded pursuit of perfection leads him to sacrifice relationships, physical health, and ultimately his own sanity in his quest to impress Fletcher and earn his approval.I loved it so much because as a film about the universal desire to be great at something, and the lengths we're willing to go to in order to achieve that greatness, it made me resonate so much with it. I love how it tackles the power of mentorship and the impact that a single individual can have on the trajectory of our lives.CommentsSign in to react and join the conversation.Sign inGet the appSee all edea's reviews for Whiplash (4)First watch9.9April 20, 2024Rewatch 19.9April 20, 2024Rewatch 29.9May 6, 2024Rewatch 39.9January 5, 2025
