Possession
even though i’ve watched many true crime documentaries i haven’t seen anything better than this in the genre yet and honestly i don’t think i ever will i don’t agree with the meaningless criticisms because this production deserves its cult status as a film that shaped cinema it feels like a real psychological experience making you feel subconscious fear paranoia obsession passion betrayal and madness together with deep unease and hysteria through its surreal narration dense symbolism subtext and wide angle cinematography the characters psychology is expressed visually as well i think i could understand what anna felt as she was losing her sanity how she could easily kill people yet couldn’t harm mark psychologically it feels like she senses her inner impulse more strongly when she is with mark which prevents her from feeling at ease around him even though she loves him she tries to distance herself because she fears hurting him this inner conflict gradually pushes her toward fragmentation i also felt especially sorry for the child he seemed like a figure capable of sensing and living his mother’s emotions at a very young age understanding events not through words but through feelings helen felt like another version of anna to me the same face but a completely different psyche throughout the film anna is shown with harsh lighting and chaotic framing while helen appears in softer light and more balanced compositions helen’s stillness forms a deliberate contrast with anna’s restless movements because of this helen didn’t feel more normal to me but rather strange and unreal the unnamed creature was the most disturbing aspect of the film if it existed only in anna’s mind others wouldn’t be able to see it so i think it physically exists within the story though its identity and symbolism are intentionally left ambiguous the figure we see at the end feels like a perfected emotionless version created by anna even though the person at the door looks exactly like mark it doesn’t feel like the real mark but something perfectly imitating human form the ending didn’t feel happy to me instead it carried a false sense of peace where problems remain unresolved but emotions themselves have been removed when the perfect woman image represented by helen and the perfect male copy appear they create the image of an ideal couple from the outside yet the film presents this not romantically but disturbingly the siren sounds reinforce this feeling everything seems complete yet something is clearly wrong the film ends with a conclusion that simultaneously suggests resolution and threat implying that in relationships we sometimes choose not to resolve pain but to eliminate emotion itself
