The Thing
*I didn't think it would happen, but here we are my first 5 star rating in 2025, took me long enough to be honest. (edit: it's not my first, because I watched Donnie Darko on the 4th January 2025, anyways it's been forever since I gave out the 5 star rating, and by doing so I completed my own challenge to give out every single rating in August)*
I am not a fan of Horror because I am always scared as shit and literally let it consume me very easily, that being said, I might sleep with my eyes open tonight.
The film creates a sense of being trapped, right from the start. The entire set-up is basically just demonstrating that there is no escape. Especially by not showing anything from the outside world, it enforces the entrapment. This is a cruel part to the entire story, it lets everything feel realer and much more dangerous, nobody is coming to save you.
Absolutely elite, is the score. It's not just horrifying but it perfectly plays into the different scenes and conveys emotions, sometimes contradictions which just makes it more frightening. I would say it's the perfect music for a Horror film to get the viewer hooked.
Progressing in the movie, you can notice a shift, it's slowly drawing away from classical horror and shifts into psychological horror. Did I mention, I said "just shoot me already" atleast 5 times?
It enhances the entire film by leaps and bounds, every character is explored more, each psychologically reasonable. All drowned in paranoia. They feel unique, overall this shift was genius.
It not only shows that Carpenter can do a Horror Movie, but that he also can do an absolutely twisted Horror Movie. Did I mention, I said "just shoot me already" atleast 5 times?
But don't make the mistake and think the classical horror's over, don't be so silly. Because exactly then it hits you, super sharp. The practical effects look so scary and disgusting, you don't want to look at it, but so interesting, you can't help but be fixated, admire this insane work from 1982.
The film carries so much, which is very well delivered by the actors. It left me stunned, after just 20 minutes and doubled my Arachnophobia.
That ending is so twisted, keeping the music play, Carpenter knows how to get into the viewer's head and *continues to play his mind-twisted game with us.
*
I felt like killing myself rather than watching this atleast 5 times, if I haven't mentioned that already.
