I’ve been thinking about how to write this review, because oh my god. I don’t think any words can explain or describe how much i love this movie. It’s by FAR one of my favorites. The scenes, the way it’s filmed, the actors, just everything about it is pure perfection to me. Also the end scenes made me love this movie even more. The whole vibe of it and the way it’s not a full screen movie made this all more enjoyable.
I get why people would rate this movie low. Don’t get me wrong, i truly get it. I think that whoever downvoted this movie, just didn’t understand it the way it was meant to be understood, and honestly if you don’t understand this i’m just jealous of you. I’m fucking jealous of you. It’s like that one quote; Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comforted. That’s what i personally think this movie was made to do. It’s supposed to make the people who needed to see this feel rotten inside, and the people who didn’t need to see this just confused as to why it was made this way.
It shows so many problems that teens nowadays have to face. Some teens atleast. Even the people who you think don’t even deserve to feel that way have their reasons and that’s visible in this movie. It shows us the ability of people to just accept and take the abuse we get. Doesn’t matter if it’s physically, mentally or emotionally. It’s also about setting your own boundaries; Stevie doesn't have the confidence to define himself and set boundaries, so he gloms onto whatever he thinks is cool — whether that's his brother's posters and CD collection or the boozy, skirt-chasing, trouble-seeking rebellion of skater boys. It’s what caused his downfall, yet it’s also what caused his best moments of his entire life. Friendship is such a strong thing and the people that will and can hurt you the most, can also be the people you feel the most comfortable and important around.
Besides those problems it also shows stuff like self-harm, stealing, suicide and just selfishness. It shows the way even your closest friends can turn against you or pull you down even if they don’t really realize it themselves.
This is one of those movies i’ll think about tomorrow, but also 6 years from now when I’m laying in bed, awake and thinking of everything that has happened to me. It gave me comfort i didn’t know i could get. I’m not sure if I’d really recommend it to my friends since they aren’t the same type of people i am, one of them is and if he reads this, i would recommend it, but be careful my love.
This movie was absolutely brutal and it’s about the reality of adolescence. Watch this at your own cost.
