this is one of my all-time favourites. rachel has been diagnosed with cancer and greg’s (a social outcast) mum wants him to be friends with rachel. he also makes films with his friend earl. turns out they all get along very well and greg and earl try to make a film for rachel.

picked this for obvious reasons but also because of how pure and wonderful it is. yes it is a bit hollywoody but it can also be quite frank for a movie like this. these characters are fairly realistic. it’s not wishy-washy but it’s not grim. also one that’s likely to remind you of the good times you had with isaac.

i’ve got the dvd.

classic tale. classic book. not sure if you’ll like it but it is one of the warmest, kindest, most empathetic and beautiful stories ever. and it so happens a death is a major plot point and how everyone decides to try and cope with that is beautiful.

netflix

calum and sophie are father and daughter. sophie is eleven and calum takes her on a week trip to turkey. sophie is now in her thirties and the film is her vivid memories of this trip. it’s not made clear to us for a very long time why this trip is significant. the answer isn’t clear cut.

this movie is devastating so proceed with caution. it’s not grim or anything but it takes bittersweet to a whole new level. the way memory operates here is insanely complicated. the way childhood is depicted is uniquely accurate. you’ve never seen a parent-child relationship shown like this on screen, especially not with such a young child. it can be harsh but it can be joyous. it’s not an easy watch but if you feel up to it i think you’ll get a lot out of it.

i’ve got the blu-ray

potentially strange choice but feel like this one encapsulates carrying on to learn about someone after they’re gone as well as that being a sad thing. harry starts to learn how the happy parts might always be intertwined with the sad parts and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

netflix

this one obviously has the fantasy fairytale ending that you don’t get in real life but it does still end in loss and deals with loss in various ways, through death, abandonment, and separation. and yet it manages to do this all with such hope and heart. you’ve probably seen it but watch it again. truly one of the most wonderful.

just a fantastic movie to change your view on little things. marcel is a shell, who has shoes, but you will undoubtedly learn a lot from him.

i’ve got the blu-ray.

follows a man as he watches the people who come through this house in the decades following his death. it is very slow and thoughtful but if you have the patience it’ll make you think about a lot you don’t usually have the time to.

i’ve got the blu-ray.

it’s a feel-good film that’ll bring you up a bit after a long, hard day. bridget is a waitress in her thirties and takes a job for the summer as a nanny for precious six-year-old frances. frances asks her the big questions and is always honest. they’re relationship is a delight to watch as bridget navigates an emotional younger boyfriend and the complicated feelings she has about a recent abortion.

the boys in a neighbourhood are fascinated by the five sisters who barely leave the house under strict discipline from their religious parents. as the title suggests this has terrible consequences and gets into incredibly murky territory as they all consider blame and the inability to cope with loss. thematically it is incredibly complex so i can’t really say what you might take away from it but it’s a great watch, and not too bleak. often very funny.

this is not about drumming. it’s about a drummer losing her hearing. he reckons with whether he should get implants, or let nature carry its course. a difficult watch but a rewarding one as you see loss in a different sense and new ways to deal with it in different situations.

prime.

this is a non-scary ghost scary where you also get to see paul mescal’s bum so bit of a no-brainer. two guys fall in love in an empty apartment block as one of them visits their long-dead parents in his imagination. incredibly tricky to watch but very powerful.

disney+

about a prison officer working on death row who discovers one of the inmates has the power to heal people. heartwarming and poignant it’d be a good one for you and lucy to watch.
honestly don’t know if i can recommend this one to you. it is about what happens when a boy loses his best friend as he grapples with whether he had anything to do with it. this upset me to no end so i can’t imagine how it would affect you. just thought i’d put it on in case you were interested.
following jackie kennedy in the days following JFK’s death. natalie portman does grief incredibly well. you know exactly what’s going on in her mind whilst also knowing you’ll never fully understand. maybe you will more than i did.

it’s about a teenage girl with cancer who starts seeing a drug dealer called moses, who is weirdly good for her. it sounds like a cliche plot but the film is anything but. it’s set in rural australia and captures the domestic setting and how that shapes a person with a terminal illness’s life. it’s very wonderful, very moving, very pretty. the parents are great as well.

netflix.

this is a beautiful film about a little girl staying with some distant family members and finally learning that she can be loved and that she can love. need i say more? i’ve got the blu-ray if you wanna borrow it.

teen rom-com that’s pretty devastating. someone at school randomly blows up and so this lad finally decides to shoot his shot. unfortunately people in their class carry on blowing up so they all end up in quarantine together. deals with the messiness of loss but how you get there in the end no matter how tough the journey is.

netflix.
