Carrie
This feels like Carrie’s equivalent to Scott Pilgrim Takes Off or Rebuild of Evangelion. It’s different, and it takes its liberties with a lot of the story. I don’t love most of the changes, but the writing is really strong, so it works for me, and the context of the story presented here is pretty good.
There’s only one change I really hate: the whole Emaline thing and the telekinetic sorority. It feels like a tacked-on way to create a Stephen King-verse show. It’s unnecessary, and it removes the fact that the prom massacre is fully Carrie’s decision. I feel like Flanagan had an interesting approach to this story, but I don’t like how he takes this moment away from Carrie and gives it to an OC taking over her body. It just feels really weird and shoehorned in.
Besides that, I feel like the actors did a great job in this, and I found that the show said what it wanted to say. Nonetheless, the story loses the focus and tragedy that make the Carrie story so good so they can try to force two more seasons out of it.
Overall, I like this show. It’s a really good YA show with great teen dialogue writing, but I know it could’ve been a phenomenal piece of TV. I didn’t want the same thing as the De Palma movie. I’m happy I didn’t get a boring rehash, but not all of this worked for me, and I am disappointed that I didn’t love this more.
I am very skeptical about seeing what comes next, though. Hopefully, it surprises me positively.
