Beau Is Afraid
Wow. Entirely what I was expecting, but also blew my expectations out of the water. Beautiful movie, horrifying, but i can’t help but feel like the audience pulls me out of movies like this.
This is a funny movie, but some people just keep laughing at parts that aren’t supposed to be funny! Maybe I’m wrong and just a pessimist, but damn, during some of the most serious/gut wrenching parts people are slapping their knees and laughing out loud. Totally buzzkill. Guy next to me smelt so bad and was leaning into me and bumped into me like 5 times. Also when the movie ended the theatre was silent and he turned to his friend and loudly said “i related to that way too much”. Damn???!!
Movie was amazing, anyone other than Joaquin phoenix could not have pulled it off. I really wish the score could have been more present because bobby krlic did absolutely amazing in midsommar. Fire temple is forever seared into my brain because of that movie.
You can feel that this is so personal and meaningful to ari aster. Definitely that project that sits in the back of your head for eternity, probably feels so good, but terrifying to release it to the world.
There we’re some moments where I wish it would lean a bit further into specific feelings or scenarios, but that’s not the point of this movie. Definitely gonna need to rewatch ALONE.
