Cabaret
- to get the funnies out of the way, "so do i" had me GAGGED omg- anyways- this should be tagged as a horror- genuinely i feel sick to my stomach after watching this film, especially given the state of modern politics - the stark contrast between the sexual and queer liberation of the 1920s with the atrocities of the 1930s makes stability feel impossible- "is it a crime to fall in love... if you could see her through my eyes, she wouldn't look jewish at all" was one of the scenes that made me feel particularly empty- and the implications that we are also the audience watching the cabaret.. yeah- the biggest takeaway is that power is established through money, and like sally makes blatantly clear, money extinguishes love. - the wealth gap increases, the poor give up on their dreams, they allow themselves to get taken advantage of because they don't have another option, the rich just sit in the audience and point and laugh, they sit inside to forget about the jews they are murdering on the streets outside, and those without power are too afraid to help so they run off to argentina- thank you to the costume and makeup designers who brought 1931 berlin to life- also the final 4 seconds is absolutely fucking terrifying and yes it scared the absolute shit out of me
