Monkey Man
i was already hooked 3 MINUTES into this film. i want to violently make out with dev patel's directing style it's gorgeous and brilliant and captivating and cinematic i LOVE IT. there are so many little intricacies and details and metaphors that i picked up on that i am too lazy to type out but they are what make this such a good movie. and i could talk about the soundtrack for hours dude oh my god. regarding technical aspects this is one of the best directorial debuts i've ever seen, but it's highly underrated. i understand why people think that the message is "anti-hindu" because i thought so too at first but it's so much deeper than that. people that didn't understand this film say that it's paradoxical in its opposition against right wing idealization of the Indian government, but my interpretation is that this is a commentary against growing hypocrisy in followers of Hinduism and, of course blind hindu nationalism, rather than just Hinduism as a whole. and not giving the underdogs in this film a clear sense of oppression as a caste makes more sense in my opinion because that's not how they view themselves in the real world. it's complicated, but realistic. the fact that dev patel made this film at all should tell you that this is more so a commentary against the government, since it was a huge risk releasing it. this film was meant to open up discussion about the complexities of India's reactions towards the actions of the BJP and hindu nationlists, which he absolutely achieved in a bold, daring way. the amount of passion and personality dev patel put into this just climbs out of the screen and hits you like a brick, it's just brilliant
