Paprika
A rich masterpiece that could only exist the way it is, as an animation.
Satoshi Kon meets Madhouse for another mind-bending journey into the subconscious, creating what might be their most ambitious and perfect collaboration yet. After their groundbreaking work on Perfect Blue, Kon and Madhouse proved they could push animation beyond its perceived limitations. Now, with Paprika, they've outdone themselves.
What immediately sets Paprika apart for me is Madhouse's commitment to diverse character representation. Unlike studios such as Kyoto Animation, which often suffers from same-face syndrome, Madhouse presents a world populated by people who look and feel distinctly real and recognizable.
Too lazy to finish, but the visuals, storytelling, and themes are also praiseworthy. Just watch itttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt. And the music is phenomenal. When the first dream sequence transitions to the intro... holy shit, I thought I came, but I actually came during the iconic Paprika march. Just watch it.
