The Room
Episode 19 of the Cineflek podcast is out now!! (Apple Podcasts, Spotify)
I don't know whether it's more respectful to rate this movie a 5 or a 1/2, but I eventually decided on a 5. The room is a viewing experience you will never forget. There is something that comes up on screen every 10 seconds that will confuse you even more than what you just watched.
The best way I can describe it is like if aliens picked up our TV signals for a couple months, then tried to replicate the human interaction they observed. What you get is an extremely disjointed narrative that feels like it's written by a very perverted 5 year old. It goes beyond Tommy Wiseau (who claims to be an all American guy) not understanding American culture, there is a fundamental disconnect between the film and the way humans actually behave, and it is captivating.
What continues to draw people back to this bizarre film? I think it is the heart put into it by Tommy himself. There are plenty of bad movies (Sharknado, for instance) that know what they are and draw smaller cult audiences, but The Room is so unintentionally off-the-wall and keeps you noticing more and more bizarre details on every watch.
Not every masterpiece intends to be great. This film stands alone in that it intended to be brilliant, and succeeded in a totally different way. Tommy is unforgettable.
. . .
This week on the show, I had a really good friend of mine, Sydney Garrell, on to discuss this masterpiece. Hope you enjoy!
