Sinners
Okay so you know when people say 'that was a real nail-biter' and in your head you're like 'yeah I didn't bite my nails haha but it was definitely high-stakes!!' um I was actively biting my nails this whole movie. I hate when people take out their phones the second they exit the theater to write their review but I literally need to articulate my thoughts right now!!
So casting was actually perfect. Michael B Jordan LITERALLY killed it (no like literally he was stabbing people left and right dawg) and that kid who played Samuel was like!!! What!! My guy is GOING PLACES!! Hailee Steinfeld you know I love if you've seen my account (Spider-Verse, Edge of Seventeen) but I've never seen her in a role that isn't awkward teenage girl so it was SOO COOL to see her range!
My summary: Music, Comedy, Fire, Music, More music, Blood, More music, more blood, fire, more fire, music!
The scene that really hooked me in this film was the scene where Samuel is playing and we see the music of the past and the present and the future intersect while the building burns. I love film and I love music. They're my two favorite things ever. So you can imagine my delight when I saw this cinematic and musical masterpiece of a scene. (Don't get me started on the Irish dancing.)
My only complaint is that I couldn't tell the difference between Stack & Smoke in the beginning. (This is a joke!!)
Smoke shooting the Klan at the end was SO satisfying and I was so shocked that the movie didn't even end there!
I actually like that Sammie chooses music in the end, despite the risk. I think it's a satisfying ending for his character too.
The stakes were high & I loved it. There also is not a single shot in this film that I wasn't in awe of. Sinners is visually pleasing, horrifying, comedic, action-packed, thrilling, musical, and never too much at the same time. The filmmakers took a risk and I guarantee you-- they do not and will never regret it.
