Chernobyl
Legasov sacrified his life for the world
Chernobyl is a scarily beautiful series that not only tells us the story but, most importantly, captures the pain and suffering of the people involved and affected by this catastrophe.
During the trial scenes, I found myself screaming in frustration—how could they remain indifferent in the face of the truth?? Watching Legasov fight to expose the facts, only to be ignored, made me scream out loud in frustration. He had to take his own life just to ensure the remaining reactors were made safe. How is that even possible? The system failed, and I despise and hate everyone who chose to stay silent.
The cinematography was incredible, and so was the acting. I really enjoyed the side story of Pavel (Barry Keoghan) as well, an ordinary young man who was called to do something he had never imagined himself doing: killing. This clearly shows how so many terrible things happened after the explosion, and they weren't just because of the radiation.
The setting and reconstruction of the nuclear site were perfect, in my opinion, and how they recreated rotten and burnt bodies almost made me cry and throw up.
Leonid Toptunov was only 25. *“When the truth offends we... we lie and lie until we can no longer remember it is even there, but it is, still there.
**Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth.
**Sooner or later that debt is paid.
**That is how an RBMK reactor core explodes.
Lies*.”
(–side note: I will consider this series American because it is produced by HBO [with Sky, which is from the UK, but whatever] and because most of the cast is American, even though the director is Swedish.)
