Weak Hero
SEASON 2
before writing my review i want to add to this one that i wrote right before watching the second season:
tomorrow Weak Hero will be back with a second season, and i don't think i'm ready.
i've been scared seeing the new cast, wondering whether a sequel like this, with this many new characters, would've ruined the vibes or even the story itself of the first season.
but then i watched a clip by accident and my heart was broken into a million pieces—seeing Sieun act like Suho made me tear up uncontrollably.
i'm so grateful for how many lessons and memories this series has left me.
i learned a lot about myself from the characters, and even became more introspective and understanding than before.
this kdrama has helped me going through different stages of my life (especially school life)... i don't think i would've been the same without it.
without them.
whenever i think about it, my mind feels at ease, finally understood.
when a series is capable of things like this you can easily state that you will keep it in your memory for the rest of your lifetime.
-
now i just finished watching it and it's clear that there will be a third season—i had that feeling ever since i got to know that Netflix secured the rights for the series.. well, at least we'll be able to see Sieun and Suho together again in more moments than just that scene in the last ep (which everyone has already seen because y'all stupid ass mf love to spoiler things to people as if your whole life depends on it, goddamn i hate yall so much.)
*“While I can't sleep, I wonder when you'll wake up”
*
i felt a lot of things during this season, but mainly thanks to what had been already built in season one, cause it definitely had a different vibe (not a bad thing) but could've been better.
am i wrong if i say that things went by a bit too fast? i wanted to feel more, to understand more deeply the characters.. we see only the surface of Baku's and same goes for Hyeontak and Juntae, even Baekjin—who definitely resembled Bumseok. it's crystal clear, but i still needed more.
once again Sieun felt extremely relatable, even for Baku, that found himself in him through the "guilt feeling" they both were trying to escape.
Sieun is stuck in his own head, stuck in his old school, stuck in the devastating emotions he felt while fighting for his and his friends' lives.
this triggered in me heart-wrenching emotions i couldn't contain.
*“It's just... I'm more comfortable alone”
-
“I had forgotten... everything you taught me.
That it is great to have friends.
That it is great to laugh.”
*-
“What you did for me... I'll try to do for others”
the characters' dynamics were incredible.
it really managed convey perfectly how much Sieun needed exactly them—their friendship meant everything to him.
i love bromance. they care for each other, they cry when something happens to one of them, they love each other.
i'm so thankful whenever a series is able to make the viewers forget about the stigma of male-to-male relationships, especially when it's teenagers who fight all the time.
it felt almost healing to me seeing a straight up friendship in its purest form—one where care, love and emotional support aren't hidden but celebrated. i especially went crazy with Hyeontak and Juntae's friendship.
seeing Bumseok in Sieun's dreams felt like a punch in the stomach. he talks to him, making him aware of the dangers he would face if he goes back to his new friends. “You'll get hurt again. Have you forgotten?” “Are they more important than me?”
in these scenes we can see Sieun's subconscious trying to drag himself down. guilty, he also says sorry to Bumseok. they both cry. Sieun let go Bumseok's arm that tries to keep him on the ring where he lost his best friend(s).
then, he wakes up.
—
i could complain about some other things, for example, why would they cast a 34 years old that looks like his age to be an high schooler? (Bae Nara)
but i choose not to because when i will read this review in the future i only want to remember how much i cherished this kdrama and how it impacted me still during a second season.
i feel like i have more to say... but i should stop, i'm getting emotional again.
