The Fall
MUBI 4K Theater Re-release 2024
“It’s my story.”
“Mine too.”
What a gift to see this on the big screen. A GIFT. And still as magical as the first time. To somehow toe the line between fantastical and raw fidelity so seamlessly is astonishing. It was an even greater gift to take my friend to see it for the first time having gone in completely blind. It’s both exactly the kind of movie he’d go for and completely out of his comfort zone. In the end, he really enjoyed it and another great film shared under our belt.
Last time, I praised Lee (as I should) but man, I need to give it all to Cantica this time! So young, yet chock full of that childlike innocence, comedic heart and those little tears. She’s the beating heart of the whole movie.
I kept trying to imagine what this film would’ve been like made by anyone else at any other time and it’s impossible. If it were made today, I have a feeling the drawn out scenes between Alexandria and Roy wouldn’t exist and would’ve cut out what is obvious improv. And of course, the locations. Either more built sets or green screen rather than the harvest of 10 years of location scouting come true. It’s perfect and I’m dying for the day Criterion finally accepts it into their collection.
“We’re a strange pair, aren’t we?”
A swarming, visually captivating story about the power of storytelling. It feels like a legend raised from the dead. I’m so glad people finally get to see the masterpiece this film truly is. Please please please watch it.
