Monster
We were born as an abominable. The conformity sculpts us into a shape as we grew. When you go out of shape, you'll have to cut pieces of yourself to fit. But would you live as you watch pieces of yourself got scattered? Or would you live as an exiled abomination but true and complete?
This movie shows how conformity cuts the children's true self, they were told that they're a pig-brained human, abnormal. They made them believe that they're a monster. But were they really a monster? The question that kept lingering throughout the movie is "who is the monster?" but when you reached the end, you'll find out there is no monster in this story. Because you'll ended up sympathizing with each character as you learn about their perspectives. There are victims, but who's to blame?
Each perspective delivered a different tone. From the start, we were served by the mysterious and chilling tone, a thriller and mystery movie, of a mother who needs to find the culprit of her son's abuse and seeks justice. But we ended up in a very heartbreaking coming-of-age genre inside the perspective of innocents.
I've only watched a few movies by kore-eda but I absolutely adored his subtlety and attention to the details. It's what makes the first time watch and a rewatch felt like a whole different experience when you pick up the details and makes it more heartbreaking.
I'm absolutely IN LOVEE with this movie. Probably because the expectation sets up by the title, poster, and synopsis that turns out to be one of the biggest click bait i've ever experienced while picking movies. Would definitely rewatch this on a daily basis 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
