"I'll remind you of everything"
I wasn't feeling all that well today. I'm away from my home, thousands of miles away from my family, my friends, everyone that I know, and it was really hitting me today. So I decided to put this on. And OH MY GOD i really wasn't looking forward to cry today. The scene where jesse describes his mom to Johnny was soooooo goooood. I immediately started crying from that point onwards. Made me miss my mom so bad. It also hits more if you see it from johnny's perspective. He is hearing all these things about his sister from her son. He might have started reminiscing the time when they were kids. She was also a little girl once. Now he knows alot has changed since then. She has a family of her own now, which comes with its own challenges, she has an unstable husband, she has a kid to take care of, she is doing things she didn't like when they were kids like eating steaks as Johnny points out she didnt like it when their own mother did it. All of their talks were so good. Made me wonder about my own relationship with my sister. What will we be like when we grow up? How much would we have changed? Would we drift apart alot? Will I forget everything? Like they said in the movie
"In your confusion and delight, you will forget where you came from. You will grow up, travel, and work. Perhaps, you'll have children, even grandchildren of your own. Over the years, you will try to make sense of that happy, sad, full, empty, always-shifting life you're in. And when the time comes to return to your star, it may be hard to say goodbye to that strangely beautiful world."
Dialogue like this is why I picked the worst time to watch this movie. I was sobbing. But at the same time it's sooo good to see such human topics portrayed on film. This movie really pulled all my heartstrings in the span of like 100 minutes. It almost feels like a therapy session. It's in that same bracket of movies like "Aftersun". Ofcourse both movies have the same "Guy goes on a trip with a child" plot. But yeah this movie hits just as deep. Mike mills explores family, love, parenting, loneliness, mental health. And Everything is done so maturely. This is one of those movies that change your outlook on life. I still can’t quite put into words how this movie made me feel. It's just a really beautiful piece of cinema. Might be a Top 3 A24 movie ngl.
Long ahhh review ik, jesse would have hit me with that *blah, blah, blah, blah *for this lol😭
