Fallen Angels
"On august 29th, 1995, I ran into my first love again. But she seemed to have forgotten about me. I guess I'd gotten too handsome."
This is my second Wong kar-wai* movie after Chungking Express*. And wow what an absolute Visual Masterpiece. Cinema is a visual medium and Wong kar-wai uses that to its maximum potential. The cinematography is absolutely peak. All the camera movements, the choppy Slo-mo's, the lighting, greens, reds, neon, and at times black and white give this movie such a unique and captivating look into the dream-like, almost nightmarish and claustrophobic 90s Hong Kong. Wong kar-wai is officially the god of portraying Love, Loneliness, melancholy, yearning, sadness* on screen. Everyone in this movie is so lonely. And to make things worse, in love with someone who doesn't love them back. The Agent and Blondie with the hitman, Ho chi mo with Charlie, and Charlie for Johnny, the man who left her for another blondie. But the most interesting relationship for me was the agent and hitman one. The way her obsession unfolds in the movie is so crazy. Masturbating on his bed and then Cleaning his apartment, wearing his perfume, going through his trash, going into the same places and bars he goes. I want a women like that lol. Also i dont know why wong kar-wai portrays "Cleaning the apartment"* as a love language. Bro did it in both chungking and this lmao.
I also wanna talk about one of my favourite scene in the movie. That scene in the bar where the Hitman quits the assassination business and let's the agent know by telling her to play that "1818" *song in the jukebox. Wow absolutely peak. Literally one of the best use of music i have ever seen in a movie. Period. And also in general i would say this movie has one of the best soundtracks of all time. Every piece of music used in this movie elevates the experience 100 times. Another great use of music was in that black and white scene with Ho chi mo and Charlie, where he looks happy, head over heels in love with her, and she is looking away probably thinking about the guy that left her for blondie. The way that scene is shot with everyone in the background moving around, Ho chi mo smiling, in love, lost in his own world and charlie sitting still and sad. Absolutely perfect mix of cinema with music.*
Another thing I noticed was that the only person that was happy in this movie was Ho chi Moo, and he was the only guy who was not alone. He had his dad. But when his dad passes away and his first love is gone too, he also becomes like everyone, lonely and sad. Drifting into the ever so lonely Hong Kong just like The Agent and in that moment he stumbles upon her in that restaurant. Both lonely. Both heart broken. And finally in that Final Iconic shot of them together on the bike, they find each other. Maybe not forever, maybe just for a little while, they provide each other comfort. Sooooooo goooood. This movie genuinely makes me wanna run away to Hong Kong, get a small ass apartment and smoke some ciggerates while i wallow in my sadness lol.
