Obsession
This movie has so much deeper than I initially thought. Like wow.
I can imagine that how Bear felt when Nikki became obsessed with him is an intensification of how Nikki felt when Bear was obsessed with her.
If he were to tell Nikki (crazy version) that he didn’t want to be with her anymore, she’d be like “NO NO NO WHY DONT YOU WANT TO BE WITH ME” or something along those lines, and probably lose her mind.
When Nikki (real version) friendzoned Bear, he basically did the EXACT same thing. In that sense, the depiction of crazy Nikki honestly isn’t that far off from Bear.
Bear is in love (or is he? If he did love her then he wouldn’t put her through this. He’s objectified her to the point where her feelings don’t matter to him. When she starts going crazy and hurting herself he doesn’t really try to help her just says she’s freaking him out and that what she’s doing isn’t okay) with Nikki. He gets rejected by her and immediately essentially forces her to be with him. Like he can’t handle rejection and desperately tries to force her to be with him. This is insane “nice guy” syndrome, absolutely no regard for her feelings.
Also, more on the note about Bear “loving” Nikki… I don’t buy it. I mean he disregarded her feelings about feeling lost in life, waived off her writing as trivial, and called her a name that he KNOWS she really doesn’t like. I mean this guy just seems like a confused and ignorant person. Ignorance can be incredibly harmful.
My jaw DROPPED when “real” Nikki asked him to kill her and he said “Is being with me really that bad?” Like BRO you’re literally FORCING her to be with you. Like everything Nikki does, says, sees, isn’t able to be controlled by her. She’s in the passenger seat to her own body.
The sex scene with the blank stare and forced moans was also so haunting. Like Nikki had to experience all of that against her will. Any time they kiss, have sex, or do anything else it’s all against her will. And Bear KNOWS this. He knows that she only thought of him as a friend but he’s so infatuated with his “dream” that he disregards her feelings completely and violates her over and over again.
What an incredibly deep film. It’s not even a “all wishes have some crazy consequence” type of film. People wish for money and get just that - money. Someone has to deliberately wish for something bad for it to happen. I feel like this is a really unique twist in the genre. Super well done
