Suspiria
I am sheIm absolutely fucking speechless and so fucking full of toughts I have no idea where to even begin. I have been delaying watching this movie because, I knew, when I watched it, it only felt right to write a whole essay about it. My favorite movie of all time, so many thoughts I have about it, and still I have no idea where to even begin because for me, this was such a masterpiece, and for me, movies dont get better than this. The love I have for this movie is gigantic, and I have no idea why the story was so fucking good. Everything in it was, but I dont get the bunch of love I have for it. honestly, if you asked me why I love this movie so much, I wouldn't be able to give you a proper answer. I will try my best to write a review about this movie because this was such a large movie and still I didn't find a single frame tedious. Maybe one of the best things about it was the soundtrack made by the absolute genius that Thom Yorke is. I am currently listening to the soundtrack he made, and the ending song "Here has ended" is so fucking perfect for this movie. All the songs are so different and have just such different vibes, but they still fit perfectly into each other. Yorke has a beautiful voice and has amazing talent, and I'm glad he knows how to use it in this movie.
Jesus, I actually don't know what to talk about this movie. Dakota Johnson was an amazing lead, and her acting was incredible, but also not something very groundbreaking, if I'm going to be honest. I guess that's what I love about this movie. Not everything, except maybe the ending, was more than perfect in a way; everything was kind of passive and peaceful. I think I'm not really sure, but for example, "Hereditary." One of my all-time favorites. Obviously, one of its most amazing parts was the acting, which was more than perfect. We all know how good Toni Collette was, and I'm not saying Dakota was bad. She was perfect, and it felt like this role was truly made for her, but that's not more than perfect. This movie reached perfection on all levels to me, but in that ending is a whole different story because where to even begin when talking about that ending? The cinematography and maybe the choices Luca Guadagnino made when he used that 3fps for the second camera might seem ugly to some but for me tgey were more than perfect. The literally mind-blowing ending was even better, and in my opinion, it was the best ending to a movie I have ever had the pleasure to witness. The first time watching it, I wasn't understanding anything, but now I was actually able to tell what was happening, and I'm glad I did a lot of research into this movie because it was just so interesting to explore. I love the way that ending happened and the little easter eggs the movie has. The cinematography and imagery it had were perfect. And there isn't much more I can say about it without spoiling it. It's for me a very unique experience that I simply cannot put into words, and you just have to see it yourself.
You might see a lot of people saying the ending was the only good thing about this movie, and I pretty much disagree. I mean, obviously it's the best part of this movie; it's the climax. But that doesn't mean the rest was bad. Like I said before, I found everything about this just perfect. Perfection is the only thing I can think of when describing this movie. I have so many thoughts about it that I simply cannot express in a Letterboxd review. The movie is long and definitely a slow burn, but I love slow burns like this one. It gives us everything of the story: what is that school, who the heck is our main character, what happened to her, and it doesn't do it all in a linear way. If you understand me, it doesn't go from the oldest thing that happened to the most recent. It shows us Suzie's backstory in flashbacks and fever dreams that are another thing I loved. They are so ethereal and seem so random in the beginning, but when you really notice them, you realize they were a vision. So if you finished the movie, and you are wondering who the fuck Suzie is and what her deal is, well, I noticed that throughout the movie itself, it was sort of giving us clues about who she really is. I noticed that unlike the original, Suzie in this movie isn't really a normal final girl. She doesn't try to kill the evil that threatened her; instead, she embraced it and joined it. Markos was basically stuck in that old body full of pus, baby's limbs coming off her, and a whole lot of disgusting stuff (Markos can't die, by the way). She was tired of that body and wanted a working young one, so the witches helped her or were forced to help her possess Suzie. Unfortunately for Markos, there is something really off about Suzie, and Suzie reveals herself at the end, saying, "I am mother." She is Mother Suspirium, and Markos was just a fake old ass bitch. Suzie/Mother Suspirium then proceeded to do what she did, summoning something. I have no idea what that is, to everyone who did a certain thing to help Markos so Susie has been Mater Suspiriorum incarnate from her birth, and slaughtered Marcos' supporters because she was disgusted by seeing how they used their power to their own benefit and to the students' detriment.
Overall, what else is there to say? This movie reached beyond absolute perfection for me. Each frame was entertaining. It was brutal, but at the same time, it felt so peaceful and calm. Beautiful cinematography and cool imagery. The best ending I have ever watched. Amazingly well-written story. The best remake. For me, the best movie I have ever watched, 100% invested in its story full of little Easter eggs and such a fever dream-like experience. It felt like madness at times with the way it was edited, especially in those dreams.
