Documentary Club Movement

Ever since Documentary Club started theatrically distributing… well documentaries and narrative films from all over the world in Thailand, they have also been arguably a driving force in the increasing rise and demand in documentaries made in Thailand then there has ever been in the years before. While these films can be worst then others, some basically YouTube style educational content stretched into film length, the best of these are shot in a rough unpolished personal hand held style that often reflected the harsh economic realities, political instability and treatment of marginalized communities these film documents with often interesting blend of fiction and reality. I’ve also taken the opportunity to include documentary films that are predecessors to the ones distributed by Documentary Club, I think without these we won’t get to where we are now with the ones being released and the influence of films like Mysterious Object At Noon can still be felt even if just in spirit. And also not everyone of these are non fiction but some have incorporate a mix of both. I also decide to include films exclusively directed by Thai filmmakers. While I personally do not think many of these are good on their own nonetheless these films are significant for documenting the lesser known often hidden parts of Thai existence that has long been unexplored or captured because of Thailand’s tendencies to cover up its uglier troubling political and social issues. The best I wish for is that the existence of these films will inspire younger generations of thai filmmakers to keep making films about things they care about not what the country say is important and that people be aware that Thailand is not what is often portrayed. Even with the worst films in this cannon they all undeniably capture a reality of where this country is at now.
