The Master
I remember watching this in high school and not really getting it. Now I feel kind of stupid because this movie is pretty straightforward and obviously, based on my rating, very well done.
I would say this is probably Joaquin Phoenix’s best role as it plays to all of his strengths so well. You’re afraid of him, you dislike him but you also sort of feel bad for him like an animal thats a danger to himself and others (the way Lancaster sees him). It also goes without saying that Philip Seymour Hoffman is the best to ever do it and I don’t think anyone knew that more than PTA.
At the end of the day this movie is more about the dynamic between these two fantastic performances than anything else and its so insanely gripping.
