Blade Runner 2049
My favorite movie. I like to rewatch it once in a while when I'm in the right mood, as a slow burn it's not something you just slap on Netflix (sadly, I understand this is one of the reasons it did not do well in the box office).
Villeneuve expands on the already sublime universe of Blade Runner with style, each camera shot shows an interesting, sad, but beautiful world. The soundtrack makes it even more iconic, a lot of scenes have long and open shots that make up an atmosphere that should be experienced in a movie theather.
I have to highlight the acting and characters. I love K, as a replicant he doesn't talk much but Gosling does an amazing work showcasing a lot of him: he looks tired, contained, like about to blow up because all he's been through, but he is also a bit ironic and even sarcastic when talking and interacting with others; K is curious, tends to look and explore his surroundings and reacts confused or surprised (for example in Vegas when looking at Elvis). The focus on every character faces and reactions is a fantastic example of show don't tell, you can see each character's emotion through the whole film, like Deckard reacting to hearing Rachel again or K receiving Joi with the other girl in his apartment.
Finally I love the finale: I would say it is pure existencialism, K made the decision of saving Deckard. He was not there due to fate or because being the chosen one, he just was the detective looking in this case, a piece in the puzzle around Deckard, a possible member of the synth revolution; he took a sad look at Joi, he saw what a programmed AI was, he knew he was not the same as he was about to choose. Tears in the rain is the perfect ending, just as Batty 29 years ago, he chose to save Deckard, why? I like to think is just not because he could choose, but also as a "thank you" for that real memory he had and made him feel human.
