Lost Highway
“That's fucking crazy, man.“
Watched on the fantastic looking criterion blu ray. Lost Highway is one of David Lynch’s most airtight films in my opinion. It might be overshadowed by the next entry in his L.A. trilogy, Mulholland Drive, but Lost Highway is almost every bit as masterfully crafted.
Every single element of this film works magnificently in combination with each other. This may be Lynch’s best looking picture, the use of shadows, the dark colour palette, the lighting, everything is both beautiful and ominous at same time. The soundtrack fits perfectly with the tone of the film, and there are some killer needle drops in here.
Lynch always knew exactly how and when to use music in his films, and of course Angelo Badalamenti’s score for this movie is sensational as every other collaboration between him and Lynch. The performances are so off-kilter in the absolute best way, and often genuinely chilling. The narrative is confusing, twisting, terrifying and darkly beautiful, and is paced so tightly, there isn’t a single boring moment.
