Obsession
I almost didn't go and see this movie because it isn't showing at my usual theater. It's showing at the older one, with the uncomfortable seats and narrow, crowded aisles where you have to stand up to let people through.. But I thought 'Fuck it.' and went, and I'm so glad I did. Because this might be one of the most beautifully tragic, heart wrenching movies I've ever seen.

Obsession is, as the entity said, all Bear's fault. An insecure man with a fear of rejection would rather take away a woman's autonomy than be told 'I don't feel the same.' And what's crazy is, I think that Nikki did reciprocate Bear's feelings (sort of- I personally think Bear loved the idea of Nikki, not Nikki herself). She said it herself, when she likes someone, nobody knows. And I can imagine that would only become more true if one of her friends liked the guy she likes.. God, this group of friends really needs to go to a fucking communication seminar or something. Group therapy. Fuck, something, cause they're a mess..
It's also very apparent that Bear is the villain in this story, and there were so many scenes throughout that made me feel less and less sympathetic to the horrors he was going through. (Mostly saying this cause I've seen some people feel sorry for Bear, or think he did nothing wrong... HUH?! DID WE WATCH THE SAME MOVIE????)
The first of these scenes, happens after the iconic date scene. Nikki's face- disinterested, distant, hollow... I dont even want to know what the real Nikki was experiencing in that moment.
The next scene is where I think most people picked up on how Bear wasn't a good guy, if they missed the look on Nikki's face in the sex scene. And that of course is the One Wish Willow hot line phone call. Bear doesn't hesitate to say no when asked if he wants to cancel his wish. Because to Bear, Nikki's choice doesn't matter as much as his comfort. He does not care about what decisions she would want to make, he just wants to alter his wish so he can be happy and comfortable. Bear only wants to cancel the wish when the guy on the phone tells him "Just because you wished it for her doesn't make it any less real.." God, Nikki's screams in the back were haunting..
And then, if anyone was still somehow rooting for Bear, we had the scene. You know, the one where Nikki pleads with Bear to kill her. Put her out of her misery. She's trapped, she can't do anything, she'd rather be dead than do it any longer.. and Bear, the egotistical prick, asks "Would it be so terrible to love me?" and walks off, leaving her stuck.
And then at the end, he finally does what he should have done to give Nikki her autonomy back... but does it really matter at that point? Nikki awakens, surrounded by her three deceased friends. There's no explaining her way out of this, Nikki will have to take the fall for everything. Bear's cowardice and insecurities ruined four lives, but only Nikki will face the consequences of that.
Everyone's performance in this was incredible but *my *GOD was Inde Navarrette brilliant. Her ability to switch so quickly between Nikki and the entity, her raw screams, how easily she can hide in the background of certain scenes, THE BACKWARDS WALKING- OH she'd better win ALL OF THE AWARDS for this.
There's probably a million more things I could say about this honestly, like I didn't really bring up Sarah or Ian, or the incredible soundtrack, or honestly the entity itself, but I don't want this to get too long.. Just know that I am obsessed (ha) with this movie now, and I've never had a movie so quickly jump up to my top 4 before.
