Her
sometimes i think i've felt everything i'm ever going to feel. and from here on out i'm not going to feel anything new. just lesser versions of what i've already felt.
i've put off writing this review for so so so long because i want it to be perfect. when i first watched this movie i wrote a silly one liner ("i would also fall in love with scarlet johansson just by her voice", which i still agree with btw) but i have so much more to say about this movie and i just don't know how to put it all into words. ever since i first watched her i have not been able to stop thinking about it since. usually i don't really add movies to my top 4 that i've only seen once, but after that one time it kept coming back into my mind and i just knew i had to put it in there, and so i did. and since then i've changed my top 4 countless of times, but i've never taken this film out of my top 4 yet. this was only my second time watching it, and i think the reason why is because i was scared it would lose it's value to me if i watched it too many times, i wanted it to stay just as special as the first time, and i was also a little scared that since it had been so long i might like it less after building it up in my head so much. i was originally planning on watching it exactly a year after my first time watching like i genuinely planned it but then suddenly somehow that day went by cause i was so busy and i realized the day after and i was so sad. lmao not like it really matters but anyway, i'm so glad i did because i got the opportunity to watch it for the second time at the cinema!! how much more special than that can it get??!! i think it was honestly meant to be because i have a subscription at a cinema branch in my country and i just super randomly felt to urge to check if they were playing her anywhere in the country because occasionaly they play older movies and then i literally saw they were playing it twice in this city not TOO far from me that weekend. like literally only that weekend. and it wasn't even for any special occasion like it was just so random like i'd checked if they were playing this before but they never did and now i hadn't checked in months and suddenly i saw it a few days before like omg??!! and after seeing that i checked for a bunchhhh of other movies that i really really love but none of them were being played anywhere but this one. anyway when we first got there the projector wasn't working at all and they couldn't fix it so we were sent home while we literally paid sm for transport & parking etc and i was SO sad but luckily they added a new date a week later so we went again and luckily it did work this time.
it was such a special experience for me to see this in the cinema, this movie just gives me that funny feeling iykwim like i literally can't explain it at all but i just connect to this movie so deeply and i love it so much and i relate so much to the loneliness and every single aspect of the movie adds to that melochalic feeling like it's not just the storyline but it's the music and the shots and the locations. i also think there are some gorgeous quotes in this that sometimes are so simple yet so beautiful and sometimes exactly how i feel and even though they're simple i've somehow never been able to put it into words that well. and it's just everything ugh this movie is perfect to me i suck at writing reviews i hate this but i just think this movie is so incredibly beautiful and so ahead of it's time too even though it wasn't that long ago the world has somehow almost turned into the world in this movie in a way.
i love how real of a character theodore has, he is absolutely flawed and kind of the typical annoying man in some ways but you also really empathize with him and understand him. i love how theodore barely looks at the world around him at all anymore before he meets samantha and i love how she makes him appreciate it more, and makes us all appreciate it more. it's so beautiful how eager she is to learn and how special it all seems to her and how deeply she wants to belong. and i love how in the end it does all end, because it is the realistic thing. and it's sad, but it's still beautiful and i definitely think theodore learned so much through that experience not only about the world around him but about himself.
i also think i really connect to this movie because i'm someone who has really bad avoident attachement issues and really isolate myself and find comfort in being alone and super quickly pull away the second i get close to someone. instead i often get kind of obsessed with celebrities and watch all their interviews etc. maybe because i can get to know them without them having to get to know me, without consequences, without me having to try to act a certain way #loser. and i really recognise that in theodore, how difficult he finds it to commit to something real, something he knows might end up hurting him, something that drains him too much. and i really know how bad that is for me and the people around me and i know i need to change and i try and i feel so seen by how he deals with the same thing and seeing him come to terms with that and try to change.
joaquin phoenix and scarlett johansson obviously carried this movie but every single supporting actor/actress was absolutely incredible in this aswell
okay anyways i wanted to write a perfect review and this is SOOOO far from it uhm might edit it i can't write reviews i suck at putting things into words and i just rant about random stuff in my life instead but yeah i love this movie
you know, i can feel the fear that you carry around and i wish there was something i could do to help you let go of it because if you could, i don’t think you’d feel so alone anymore.
