Lady Bird
this movie hit me so much harder upon second watch and i really don't know why. i always feel like i haven't changed that much. or well in some ways at least. and i feel like back when i saw this, i was going through similar things as i am now and things that would make me feel connected to this movie. and i always think i've always been a pretty emotionally mature person but yet watching this now 2 years later made me feel so much different to when i saw it 2 years ago. whenever something like this happens it's so interesting to me, why did i not feel the same way at first, what changed that made it hit me so much more intensely? was it just the mood i was in that day, or was it something that changed within me between those periods of time that made me connect more? it always makes me wonder how many movies there are out there that i've seen before that might actually be some of my favorites if i watched them today even though i didn't really feel any type of way about them then? when i did watch this it was also at a sleepover with my friend and i was SO tired i remember struggling to really keep my eyes open at points so maybe that also affected it, but it still makes me wonder. i'm so glad i got to see this again but at the cinema this time, and i'm so glad i got to connect to it so much more this time because this movie is now so important to me.
anyway, i saw this at the cinema with my mom, and it was such a wonderful experience. i was just going to write about how they recently started doing a special kind of cinema experience where once a month (or smth like that) they select a movie that came out earlier and they keep the lights halway on so you can knit and this was one of those, me and my mom can't knit but i really wanted to see lady bird at the cinema so we went anyways and i was so curious to see how many people would actually knit and how many would just watch the film, and to my surprise literally almost everyone i saw as knitting, at least around where we sat! it was so cute and the two girls who organize this show what knitting project they're going to working at while watching the movie (this time they were both sick though, so they didn't actually stay this time, they went home after presenting which they were really sad about). but anyways what i was saying, i was just going to write about this when i remembered they were going to reveal what movie they would play next after the end credits rolled and i realized we didn't say until then, so i just checked my cinema's site and they will be playing la la land! which is so funny to me because when writing about how differently movies can hit upon a second viewing and how i wonder how many movies can change like this for me as well i was thinking about la la land a lot because it's so many people's favorite movie and so many people rate it 5 stars, and when i saw it for the first time i didn't really connect to it or get fully involved in the movie, and i felt like i was missing out on something great and i was kind of sad about it since it seems like a movie that would so be something that i'd adore, and while i liked it and thought in production etc it all looked great i just didn't connect in the way many others did. and since then i've seen edits etc and loved them and loved the visuals and the story and i've always wanted to rewatch because i think that, when it's the right time, i can love it more this time around. so seeing that that will be their next screening is so exciting to me and kind of feels meant to be! i really hope that i will have a similar experience watching that one again as i did with this one.
my mom also really loved this one, more than loved even. afterwards she said this was maybe even her favorite movie she's ever seen, and she added it to her letterboxd top 4 (i recently made her also get letterboxd yuhh)!! we both cried together at the end of this it was such a special experience, and we had a bunch of conversations about a lot of topics this movie deals with afterwards!!
