Obsession
I wanna be like Curry Barker one day, because this dude literally referenced so many iconic 80s and 90s erotic thrillers/horror throughout the film. Like the candles and “love my girl” scene towards the end of the film inspired from Crush (1993), and then the cat cooking scene inspired by the rabbit cooking scene in Fatal Attraction (1987). Then some similarities of Hedy’s character and her obsessive behaviour from Single White Female (1992). Also, the “No, No, No….” scene on the date is very much taken from Get Out (2017), but Inde Navarrette did it SO FUCKING WELL.
What I really loved about the film is how it has a very basic plot of every other erotic or obsessive thriller we see now and then, however, it takes a very creative and different approach to become an unsettling psychological horror that definitely does not fail to amaze at any point. I did laugh in awe at times simply because I was amazed by how terrific and crazy freaky Nikki kept becoming.
The whole film is completely leveled up by the performance of Inde Navarrette. Her screaming, her obsessive behavior, the expressions, her covered in blood, but also how real Nikki was still stuck in her; she’s absolutely fucking phenomenal in the role. And also the twunk Michael Johnston’s performance (he looked so hot), but his portrayal of insecurity in love, his regrets, and the way he starts suffocating slowly in the relationship was portrayed so well that I could feel it.
And, I watched it with my twink, he’s so Nikki Freeman coded, it’s a perfect date film. Personally, I wouldn’t mind using a One Wish Willow and make a wish like, “I wish Shaunak loved me more than anyone in the entire world.” Wish me well Nikki.
