Lost Highway
David Lynch works with pleasure and perverseness in the most beautiful way possible. He has such an engaging approach to showing the darkness of human nature, and how we’re often drawn to the wrong things, to the bad.
The soundtrack is an insanely powerful addition to the film’s aesthetic. I genuinely think it’s one of the best uses of music in cinema, it elevates the scenes to another level entirely.
This movie is definitely very slow and has a heavy, deliberate rhythm, but I was interested for the entirety of it. The fact that it almost becomes a horror film at times, with horror elements constantly floating around, adds a strong sense of fear and ominosity.
If I said I wasn’t confused at many moments, I’d be lying. Lynch gives us just enough information so we’re not completely alienated and can still follow the film, even if only minimally, which feels like the perfect dose here.
I loved the characters and the acting, and the fact that the main character shares my name 😉.
There are strong similarities to Mulholland Drive, but I actually thought this was better.
Peak film.
Peak Lynch.
