Carrie
where do I even start with this movie.
I think watching the movie directly after reading the book was a mistake on my part as it made me nitpick absolutely everything that happened 😭. don't get me wrong, I really did enjoy it (hence the 4 stars) but I do think that there were some things that could have been done to take it up a notch.
I'm going to start off with the things I liked. The prom scene was hauntingly beautiful, and the use of colour was immaculate. the beautiful lights and mesmerising colours started off as gorgeous and almost dreamlike, but as soon as the pigs blood was dumped on Carrie, they became overwhelming and garish. I am a teenage girl myself, and I was astounded to find out that this movie was directed by a man, because this scene, and many others in the film such as the bullying at the beginning, truly captured what it feels like to go through school as a young girl. The whole film I was empathizing with Carrie's character and I felt deeply saddened by her situation.
Now on to the things I disliked. Note that I am about to be extremely nit-picky, because, as I said before, I finished reading the book and dove directly into the film. My first criticism is that I wished Margaret and Sue both had more fleshed out characters. Sue was one of my favourite characters when reading the book, as I thought that her character was the most well done, but I felt that she became extremely one dimensional in the movie. I think this had a lot to do with the fact that the ending was changed so instead of there being a level of understanding between Sue and Carrie, you never really see them get to know each other, and it just left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. I think that Margaret's physical abuse towards Carrie was displayed accurately to the book, but I think the movie lacked in showing the affects that the mental abuse had on Carrie, especially towards the end. Speaking of the ending, I found that it was rather boring and unsatisfactory, though Margret chasing her with the knife with that evil look on her face was truly terrifying. in my opiniion, the ending erased all of carries character growth by making the last thing she does attempting to save her mother whereas in the book, she still feels remorse for murdering her mother, but nonetheless still moves on to get her final revenge.
overall I really did like this movie, but I think it is better if too separate it from the book as the book is miles above it. oh and Carrie did no wrong
p.s. John Travolta scares the hell out of me
Edit: after much consideration I have updated my review to 5 stars
