Dreams
i absolutely fell in love with every moment of this film. it’s so surreal and beautiful and scary. being very explicitly a series of dreams means these stories don’t have to follow a 3 act structure or have satisfying endings because most of our dreams often don’t. that being said i love the prevalent themes in the dreams that keep coming back time and time again. The fear of nuclear power, nostalgia, love, guilt, perseverance. i tried to list my favorite dreams but ended up writing them all down. the only weak point for me in the film is the mount fuji one; it felt particularly preachy about a topic that is obviously understandable why a japanese man of his age would have felt strongly about. There is such an adoration of nature in this movie and a nostalgia for more quaint and simple life. a life where u can live long and freely in a village with no name or electricity, and embrace death with celebration without the pressures of organized religion.
so much more i want to say and more thoughts i have but i don’t want to write for so long. this film touched me in a way few have.
