Superman
Kindness is the new punk rock
Usually I’d do some witty one liner but Superman is one of those films where I simply can’t. Superman is magic.
James Gunn delivers what has to be one of my favourite versions of the man of steel in a cartoonishly bright, comic style that I have yearned for in CBMs for years now. This is a film unafraid of adapting its source material and yet it still doesn’t feel silly. There’s a flying dog with a cape and a green baby yet as silly as that sounds, it really wasn’t and I adore that.
David Corenswet does a stupendous job of portraying every side of Clark Kent. He’s multifaceted and that’s what makes me love him. There’s a scene where he seamlessly switches from Clark into Superman through some simple mannerism changes that prove that Corenswet has the acting chops to deliver a nuanced Superman whilst retaining the Boy Scout attitudes that the character has lacked on the big screen for a number of years.
I love Lex Luthor. He’s a villain I’ve never really liked all that much, Rosenbaum (who has a tiny role in this) was by far my favourite until now. Nicholas Hoult brings a level of pure hatred to the character that I love. He’s evil for evil’s sake and that’s simply my favourite type of villain. I wasn’t sold on the idea of Hoult as Lex at first but he more than certainly delivers the diabolically evil side. I need him in a purple suit asap.
Whilst all the side characters were also great, a special mention has to be made to Guy Gardner. He’s an asshole with a shit haircut and if that isn’t Guy Gardner I don’t know what is. Seeing a live action Lantern after all this time made me so unbelievably happy.
I think the most important thing this film does however is bring back the lover boy Superman. At the end of the day he’s always been madly in love with Lois Lane and my god they were utterly perfect. Their final scene together made me smile like an idiot. There’s been a real lack of romance in CBMs recently but I’m so glad this changed that.
My dad turned to me at the end of the film and said “that’s fixed DC’s problem” and it completely has. DC is no longer the dark and gloomy franchise that it once was, it’s back to being colourful and filled with hope. Took them long enough.
