Transformers One
“You don’t have the touch or the power”
Well this film does that’s for sure!
I’ve never hidden how much transformers means to me and my god does this film not disappoint. It’s fresh and new whilst still retaining a wonderful air of familiarity.
The one thing that instantly blew me away was Iacon. It felt so alive and visually interesting, completely unlike the Cybertron of the Bay films. I love how we see bots just living life causally, it’s the closest we’ve ever got to the IDW comics and I adore that. Transformers is far more than the Great War and I’m so glad we got to explore that side briefly in this film.
The voice cast is tremendous! Chris Hemsworth stated that he wasn’t trying to do a Peter Cullen impression yet he somehow nailed it, I had my reservations but I was easily won over. Brian Tyree Henry is easily the standout though! Sweet Primus that man can act, his transformation from D-16 into Megatron felt so natural and that was all down to Henry’s performance. I also really loved Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, I love it when we get characters who are just decadent bastards!
The casual references were great and being a fan I think I caught all of them, the jokes were actually pretty funny and didn’t feel out of place and Brian Tyler nailed the score, I guess he realised his score for TFP couldn’t be topped as I heard the motif from that series crop up a few times.
If I had to nitpick, I wished it could have been slightly longer and I wished we got more Airachnid but that’s it. Maybe I’m just a biased fan but truthfully I could not care less. I loved this film!
