Chasing Amy
i don’t even know where to begin with this movie; it was a little heavier than pretty much all of the kevin smith movies i’ve seen and i liked that. the characterization was great and the way that kevin smith can capture a point in time is nothing short of masterful. the dialogue is as always amazing and this was one of my favorite instances of silent bob talking. this movie was funny throughout but felt a little more mature than other films by kevin smith which i believe payed off. the way it tackled relationships was incredibly realistic and it really made a point of how some things are so perfect yet not quite meant to be. seeking a balance of love and friendship is always hard and i could relate to banky’s jealousy of his best friend dating someone(though i can’t relate to the homoerotic undertones). it’s always hard to see someone the same when you know everything about even the bad parts. the callbacks to both mallrats and clerks really made the world feel lived in since all these characters i’ve seen previously still exist in this movie. chasing amy perfectly placed the comedy to remind the viewer of the seriousness of the rest of the movie and it really helped ground the story; it didn’t feel to dramatic or too comedic it just felt real.
